What Is Invisalign Treatment?

Invisalign is a cutting-edge orthodontic treatment that provides a comfortable and convenient alternative for straightening your smile. Although Invisalign is a popular treatment option, we find that some of our patients still have questions about the treatment process and its benefits.

Invisalign uses 3D-printed thermoplastic material to create clear aligners specifically designed to fit your teeth comfortably and gradually shift their position into proper alignment. These aligners work similarly to braces in that they use gentle pressure to create a straighter smile, but with the convenience of being able to remove them anytime to eat, drink, or brush your teeth.

Invisalign is a great aesthetic alternative to braces, but it may not be a treatment that works for everyone. Depending on your orthodontic needs, braces may still be the best option for treating particular alignment issues. You’ll need to consult with one of our orthodontists to determine whether Invisalign is the best option for you.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Our orthodontists will create a series of aligners to slowly shift the position of your teeth over the next 12-24 months, depending on the issues needing to be corrected. To achieve maximum results, you’ll need to wear your aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day. During this time, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners every 2 weeks to continue moving your teeth in small increments until treatment is complete.

The number of sets of aligners you will need during treatment will vary depending on your case. During your free consult with one of our orthodontists at Lanzetta Orthodontics, you’ll learn more about your treatment’s timeline and the exact number of aligners you’ll need.

How Will You Start My Treatment Plan?

Our team at Lanzetta Orthodontics uses an iTero digital scan to provide a mess-free, digital mold of your teeth and gums. The iTero scan allows us to:

  • Give you an accurate diagnosis
  • Customize a treatment plan based on your exact smile goals
  • Design custom aligners that are more comfortable and discreet

Once we have completed the initial exam, one of our orthodontists will sit down with you to discuss treatment length, payment options, and any additional questions you may have.

Are There Any Food Restrictions?

Since you will be removing your aligners to eat and drink, there aren’t any dietary restrictions with Invisalign. However, you’ll need to brush and floss thoroughly before replacing them after a meal. Like most orthodontic treatments, it is recommended that you do not chew gum while wearing Invisalign as it can get stuck to your aligners, and be mindful to drink only water, as other liquids may stain or discolor the aligners over time.

Do I Still Need To See My Dentist?

Yes. Although you are regularly seeing your orthodontist throughout your Invisalign treatment, you still need to maintain good oral hygiene during the process. Therefore, you should continue attending your dentist appointments for regularly scheduled cleanings and exams while wearing Invisalign to ensure that your teeth remain healthy and strong during treatment.

How Do I Care For My Invisalign Aligners?

As you wear your aligners, it is important to keep them clean during treatment to prevent plaque and harmful bacteria from sitting on your teeth and causing further problems. Every day, remove the aligners and brush them out thoroughly with clean, warm water after brushing or flossing your teeth.
